It was a humbling event—and a hilarious one. Last Saturday, having put their best feet forward for a whopping 35 kilometres, select participants in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer took a few more steps… this time, down the runway. It was the midway point in the 60 km walk, and after tucking to a hearty dinner, the crowds of fundraisers were eager for a little entertainment.

The Runway Show participants’ mission? To lift the spirits of the foot-weary masses. Their method? Carefully-crafted costumes. Their prize? Fabulous lingerie, courtesy of Panty By Post!

As Panty By Post Co-Founder Lori Kalef and Ambassador Sarah Lolley took their seats at the judging table, the DJ dropped some stomp-worthy beats.

In the Team category, “The Aushlinder Sisters” showed great creativity with their enormous pink brassiere costume, chic pink cloche hats and dainty pink fans. “La Vie” team rocked out in short fuchsia dresses, hot pink angel wings, Hawaiian-style pink anklets and, most fashionable of all, incredible energy. “Just Because” delivered superhero poses to match their pink eye masks and capes. But the prize went to team “Mère et Fille,” a two-generational team comprised of breast cancer survivor Denise LeTourneau and daughter Veronique, clad in midriff-revealing mini-skirts and bustiers made of recycled potato chip bags, and holding parasols to match.

There was only one entry for the Women’s category, but she wasn’t falling down on the job. Lynda strutted her stuff in a black and pink “Hope Fairy” costume, replete with sparkly wings and wand, and a waist band of silver stars, each featuring the word “hope” written in a different language.020

The Men’s category was last. Francis hula-danced down the aisle, wearing a grass skirt, fetching coconut shell bikini top, and hot pink lei. Chisel-chested Jonathan, one of the massage therapists who donated his time to the event, got the crowd going when he swaggered down the runway holding his massage table around his midriff, giving the impression that he was wearing nothing at all. (When he reached the end of the runway we discovered, with a certain measure of disappointment, that this was not the case.) However, the judges bestowed the honour of best costume on veteran walker Chad, completing his 34th walk for breast cancer, who wore a “2010” t-shirt as a pair of shorts, reminding everyone to participate in the 2010 walk.

The winners were thrilled with their prizes. “We both love lingerie,” said Veronique LeTourneau, speaking for her daughter and herself. “And lingerie really represents women and represents breast cancer.”

But the happiest of all was Lori. “I am so honoured to be here,” she said, her voice shaking with emotion. “This is what’s Panty By Post is all about—being strong and brave and beautiful.”
